Hungarian success on the S.ARCH Architecture Awards

Three Hungarian architect offices have been included in the shortlist of the nominees coming from 46 countries, one of them is the new building of the Batthyány László Roman Catholic Children's Home for the Blind designed by A4 Studio and implemented by our company.

2017 is the fourth year when the S.ARCH Travelling Architectural World Conference has been organized, the venue of which was provided by the HKU Faculty of Architecture. The program has comprised three parts: after the presentation of the nominated buildings already constructed and the architectural designs selected by an international pre-selection board the participants had the opportunity to attend presentations about the architectural and architecture-theoretical research of the past years.

Three Hungarian architect offices were also included in the shortlist of nominees received from 46 countries: the new building of the Batthyány László Roman Catholic Children's Home for Blind designed by A4 Studio and the Rudapithecus Spectacle Collection made in cooperation by the Architectural Studio and the Architectural Doctoral School of the Technical University in the constructed buildings category, while the recently founded CAN Architects with their proposal prepared for the new MOME Campus design competition gained attention in the architectural designs category.

After the presentations going on for two days, the announcement of results was a festive event for the Hungarian participants, namely all three projects have earned honorable mention. The international jury – the members of which besides the organizing entities represented significant architects offices from all over the world like Grimshaw, Richard Meier and Partners Architects, Snøhetta, Zaha Hadid Architects, Baumschlager Eberle or the American ARCH20 journal – evaluated the careful and devoting attitude of the designer Géza Kendik and, as a result of this, his house of solidarity for visually impaired occupants; the preserving exhibition and show building complex of the designer team lead by Zsolt Vasáros DLA displaying outstanding design details and timeless spatiality, and recommended for progressive example the university development plan of the team of young architects from Győr comprising contemporary teaching facilities integrated with the old building.

On the closing dinner it was good to hear the nice comments like the words of Chris Ryan representing the University of Melbourne: „I have to go back to Hungary – it seems contemporary architecture happens there.” Maybe sometimes you have to go to the Far East to see, but it is also good to feel not only to know that architecture of international standards can be found at home, too.
