ALDI opened in place of a former ice factory

ALDI Magyarország Élelmiszer Bt. opens its newest store in Budapest in May, the 120th store in Hungary. The building is situated at the crossing of Szugló street and Kövér Lajos street in district XIV.

At the beginning of the reconstruction there were buildings on the site. It turned out from documents found in the plan collection of the Metropolitan Archives that the building was constructed early in the 1900s as ice factory and rebuilt several times, parts were pulled down and new parts attached, then it used to function as a sports center. At the beginning of the construction a multi-storey hall building, a reception building, and an L-shaped, partly multi-level building with dwelling-storage-office functions existed on the confined area; a transformer supplying only the property was also installed in the latter. The buildings’ style, arrangement and appearance were homogeneous reflecting the style of their former owner. Although the building is 100 years old, it is no protected monument. It is sure that certain parts of the buildings are of different age but it could not be found out from the available documents when they were built. Certainly, the main building (hall) was the oldest. In the course of reconstruction of the protruding main building to be preserved we have removed the plaster from the columns and now they appear as naked brick columns. The facades have become again a plastered and painted, off-white surface, and the whole building has got artificial stone plinth. Most of the existing doors and windows have been eliminated and replaced by a new entrance that provides a more open appearance with a new reception and a canopy. The level difference of about 50 cm between the inside and the outside of the building has been filled up to the same level for barrier-free traffic. Most of the existing roofs, partitions and walls within the building have been pulled down keeping only the supports required for static reasons. Except for the two sanitary facilities (for men and for women) the interior of the building has become a large contiguous space. In order to provide comfortable traffic a windbreak has been constructed and ceramic floor tiles were laid down. The whole building has got an up-to-date and economical cooling and heating system as well as a new electricity network.
